If there is such a thing as heaven on earth then Italy’s Lake Como would be it. Located North of Italy and set in the foothills of the Alps, Lake Como is only an hour by train from Milan. To continue our Italian Summer Holiday, we travelled to Lake Como.
We left Milan at just before lunch time after having a late buffet breakfast at the hotel. Our pre-booked Trenitalia ticket that we purchased the day before says Como on it but we realised we were actually going to Lecco which is located on the other leg of Lake Como. Good thing, changing booked train tickets is easy in Italy. No questions asked.
Lake Como is shaped like an inverted Y with several towns along it of which the popular ones are Tremezzo, Varenna, Cernobbio, Laglio(where George Clooney’s villa is), the famous Bellagio, then Como and Lecco which are on opposite sides of the lake (see map).
After less than an hour train ride, on a very clean and new train, we arrived at an overcast weather. The lake was still beautiful even then. Once we were ushered to our hotel room, the view that greeted us right across our balcony took our breath away despite the gloomy weather.
Since we arrived after two in the afternoon, there was no food being served in the hotel (not a very good hotel) and we had to walk along the perimeter of the lake to look for somewhere to eat as most restaurants were also closed. In Italy, most businesses close between 2-6 pm. It started to rain. Finally, we found a little pub which was actually a gem. They served really good food.
We had a little walk around the neighbourhood after our meal and surely enough we came across a gelato shop as you would in Italy. Despite the fact that it was actually cold, we could not resist another gelato on this trip. We decided to go back to the hotel right after having our gelato and had a rest before going out again for dinner in one of the lakeside restaurants. It was one of the best meals we had on that particular trip where we had the best crab fusilli.
The next day, the sun decided to show up and we woke up to the most magnificent view from our bedroom. This was going to be a long day as we were going to take the ferry to the famous Bellagio.
Breakfast also came with a view, thank you very much. The hotel had a good breakfast spread complete with smoked salmon and a greek yogurt bar with different fruit compote and toppings to choose from.
There were magnificent lake and mountain views on our way towards the ferry. It was an hour and a half ride to Bellagio which is a must visit when in Lake Como.
